Setting the Playoff Schedule

Everyone has their favorites going into the playoff season, but the outcome of Selection Sunday will tell us a lot about which teams will have the opportunity to advance, who will be the top contenders and who are the favorites to push past rivals during the next few weeks of play.

Get to Know the New Selection Process

The NCAA has come up with a new tool to guide how the selections made. Their NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) combines data based on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses. The NET system was optimized until it was as accurate as possible and will be used going forward, as strategists feel this system will make better sense when looking at team performance data and late-season games (including the NCAA tournament. Additionally, certain types of data were omitted from the model, like game date and order, to ensure fairness and give equal importance to both early and late-season games. Also, a cap of ten points was put into place on the winning margin as a stop-gap measure to prevent rankings from encouraging unsportsmanlike play, like needlessly running up the score in a game where the outcome was certain.
